Centinela Hospital Seismic Improvements

Inglewood, CA

Placing 144 seismic piles 60 feet below an 8 story occupied hospital tower, plus a comprehensive campus renovation.

This project revolved around comprehensive seismic improvements and associated renovations to the hospital campus, including retrofit of an existing eight-story tower, new biomedical laboratory serving multiple facilities, a complete overhaul of emergency power system, new power center, courtyard, administrative areas, lobby, exterior entrance, and preconstruction services for a new emergency department.

Seismic improvements featured a new Tubex Pile structural foundation system, a solution never before utilized in any hospital in California within OSHPD jurisdiction. Abbott installed 144 Tubex Piles at a depth of 60+ feet below the eight-story acute care tower, topped with a concrete cap footing and new concrete shear walls to create a new foundation system for the tower. All construction took place while the hospital was fully occupied and operational — including active surgery on the floors immediately above.
