UW Medical Center – Northwest Center for Behavioral Health & Learning

Seattle, WA

A progressive design-build facility integrating psychiatric and medical care in Seattle.

This new six-story, all-electric facility was built through the Clark|Abbott joint venture, a progressive design-build partnership between Clark Construction and Abbott Construction, integrating behavioral health and medical care under one roof. The 229,000 sf center provides 150 inpatient beds across three programs: long-term civil commitment, geriatric and voluntary psychiatric care, and licensed medical/surgical treatment for patients with co-occurring conditions. A 24/7 telehealth program and dedicated workforce development hub round out the facility’s mission as a statewide training pipeline for behavioral health providers.

The design by SRG Partnership prioritizes a healing environment through biophilic elements, calming material palettes, patient terraces, private bedrooms, and commissioned artwork, a deliberate departure from traditional institutional facilities. Building adjacent to the active hospital campus required careful phasing and coordination to protect ongoing operations throughout construction.
