Multicare Auburn Medical Center Behavioral Health Unit

Auburn, WA

Transforming a pulmonary care unit into a new space for behavioral health healing.

A new 20-bed adult Behavioral Health Unit was created from the existing 11,000 sf Pulmonary Care Unit on the third floor of the Cascade Tower. The unit was designed with bright pastel colors, numerous windows and natural light along with modern safety features, private single-bed rooms and open social areas.

Significant coordination during construction was required with the fully-operational Gero Psychiatric Unit and Intensive Care Unit located on the floors above and below the construction activity in order to minimize disruptions to the patient, staff and services of the two areas. Specifically, Abbott had to build a new HVAC mechanical shaft from the fourth floor to the roof and place over 20 new plumbing penetrations in the third floor slab which required access to the operating ICU.
