Northwest Harvest’s unique new food bank, SODO Community Market, opened its doors on June 24. As the only non-profit food bank distributor operating statewide, Northwest Harvest’s network includes 375 food banks, meal programs and high-need schools across Washington. The new food bank replaces the former Cherry Street location which was on a steep hill and difficult for people to access.
Unlike traditional food banks, SODO Community Market was built like a grocery store and modeled after Trader Joe’s to make it feel more welcoming and less institutionalized. The food bank is planning to feed 5,000 people a week.
Abbott provided tenant improvements to convert an existing retail, storage and administrative office building into the new food distribution and food bank facility. Improvements included new storefront glazing and entry doors, new bathrooms and revisions to administrative offices.
SODO Community Market is located at 1915 4th Avenue S, near the intersection of 4th Avenue S and Holgate Street. Click here for additional services and hours of operation.
